Frequently asked questions
How much life cover do I really need?
A common rule of thumb is ten times annual income with dependents. Then run the Self-Insurance Threshold calculator for the precise number. Once portfolio plus existing cover exceeds dependents' lifetime need plus mortgage, you can begin scaling cover down.
Why is income protection a separate policy?
It covers a different risk. Life insurance pays if you die. Income protection pays if you cannot work because of long-term illness, mental health, or accident. Most disabilities do not kill you; they just stop you earning for months or years. Statistically, long-term sickness during a career is many times more likely than dying during it.
What is umbrella liability?
Standalone personal liability cover above the auto and home policy limits. In the US, typical limits run a few million for a few hundred a year. In the UK the equivalent is the personal-liability extension within home insurance. For higher earners with rentals, dogs, swimming pools, or family drivers, raise the limit.
Why amber instead of just green or red?
Because some gaps are not urgent but should not be ignored. A six-month income-protection policy is not zero coverage, but with dependents it would not carry the household through a long-term illness. Amber says: not a crisis, but a review item this year.
